The collection contains approximately 850 photos taken by or for the State of Vermont for promotional purposes. Most of the photos were taken in the 1970s and 1980s, although there is a scattering of photos taken in the 1930s and 1940s. Staff photographers for the Travel Division took most of the photos from the later period and are not credited on the photographs themselves. Private companies also supplied some of these photographs. The earlier photographs seem to have been taken by private photographers under contract to the state. The photographers include Mack Derick of The Derick Studio in Orleans, Vermont; Jack Wasserman; Eric Sanford of Manchester, Vermont; E. C. Cross of Underhill, Vermont; and Warren W. Dexter. The collection is particularly strong in photographs of skiing, both in the early days to the 1930s and 1940s, and in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. The collection also includes photographs of amusements that were popular in the 1970s including hot tubs, skiing and after-skiing activities, snowmobiling, farmers' markets, country fairs, and displays of traditional crafts. Most of the people in the photographs are anonymous, although the collection does include several photos of cross-country Olympic skier Bill Koch and one of Governor Madeleine Kunin.
